SOMALI REFUGEE

Most of the Somalian refugees were resettled in Moss Side. Built for the expanding workforce of the Industrial Revolution, the area became notorious as one of the most crime-ridden inner cities in the UK, earning the name “Gunchester” in the 1990s.  As the civil war continued, Somali-born residents continued to emigrate, with a further 25% (25,700) of residents in 2011 arrived during 2001-2003.
